Whales just at the door step...

North of Sydney in the Central Coast, whale fans are spoilt for choice. The whale is an important totem for the Darkinjung people of the Central Coast, and the gentle giants can be sighted at Terrigal Skillion, The Entrance, the Bush Street Reserve Norah Head Lighthouse, Soldiers Beach in Toukley and Crackneck Lookout in Wyrrabelong National Park. Redhead Bluff in the Awabakal Nature Reserve is arguably the best view in Newcastle.

Central Coast Charters & Nova Cruises run whale-watching tours from June to November.

June, July and early August sees the northern migration of the Humpback Whales. These gentle giants of the deep swim past The Entrance on route to the warmer water off the Queensland coast to breed and give birth to their calves. An estimated 8000 Humpback Whales made the northern migration in 2010.

Mid September to early December the mighty Humpback Whales return to our waters with their young. During this southern migration it's not uncommon to encounter the Humpback Whales very close to shore, resting, feeding and playing with their calves.
